Head Athletic Trainer – Faculty (12 Months)

Job Description

The Head Athletic Trainer, as a non-instructional faculty member, will be a dedicated individual to be a part of a team who will provide strong leadership, and a high level of service and care to student-athletes and cheerleaders. Each faculty member must carry current certifications and understanding of NATA & NCAA guidelines concerning the health and welfare of student-athletes.

This is a 12-month tenure track position for Commonwealth University Lock Haven, a NCAA Division II institution with 21 sports programs (wrestling and field hockey at the NCAA Division I level). In addition to these NCAA sports programs, this position also supports cheerleading.

Essential Duties The Certified Head Athletic Trainer is responsible for:

  • Providing high quality health care athletic training services, which prioritizes the health, safety and well-being of the students associated with Lock Haven athletics;
  • Providing prevention, protection, assessment, rehabilitation and supervised care of injuries with appropriate guidance/direction to the students who participate in athletics and follow-up with team physicians;
  • Serve as the NCAA Health Care Administrator who will be a primary point of contact with the NCAA Sport Science Institute, while overseeing the institution’s athletics health care administration and delivery;
  • Direct all Lock Haven athletic training health care and emergency care services and facilities;
  • Ensure that clinical practices, personnel and facilities meet or exceed all applicable laws, NCAA requirements, conference regulations, Lock Haven policies and procedures and industry standards including but not limited to fulfilling concussion education requirements etc.;
  • Prepare and propose athletic training coverage schedule (Including ALL Athletic Trainers) for in-season, out-of-season, post-season practices and competitions as well as daily rehabilitation hours to the Director of Athletics monthly. The coverage schedule must include the athletic trainer providing the coverage as well as their location when covering;
  • Coordinate in person athletic training coverage for all Lock Haven home competitions (in or out of the traditional season), post season championship competitions (home or away), home or away football and men and women wrestling contests/practices, ID Showcases/Clinics and summer camps. Please note, when an athletic trainer is providing coverage during one of the above-mentioned scenarios, the athletic trainer will not be allowed to provide coverage for other sports/activities;
  • Coordinate the medical coverage provided by the Team Physician. Including but not limited to scheduling physical examinations, referral procedures, championship contest coverage, football and wrestling competition coverage, weekly injury clinics, and other clinical procedures as needed/required;
  • In conjunction with the Director of Athletics, ensure that the medical services contract is followed by the medical Doctor(s);
  • In collaboration with the Director of Athletics, coordinate annual health care education for student and staff development. Program topics should include but are not limited to concussion education, mental health education, proper nutrition, etc.;
  • Ensure appropriate coverage by emergency medical personnel (e.g. Ambulance and Team Doctor[s]) in accordance with all applicable laws, NCAA requirements, conference regulations, Lock Haven contract and policies, and industry standards;
  • In collaboration with Compliance Officer, coordinate as needed the drug-testing process while serving as the primary point of contact with Drug Free Sport for NCAA and institutional testing;
  • Oversee the collection, completion and review of medical documentation/records for every student associated with Lock Haven Athletics including but not limited to: all required medical forms (HIPAA, sickle cell testing, etc.), insurance affidavits, physical clearances, medical hardships waivers, injury, treatment and mental health reports;
  • Coordinate the distribute, collection and review of the PROmotion App or similar mental health screening app information and refer student athletes as appropriate;
  • Propose to the Director of Athletics the contracted doctors standing orders;
  • Ensure secure storage, confidentiality and appropriate disposal of these records consistent with all applicable laws and practices;
  • Organize and inventory all athletic training supplies as well as ensuring safe disposal of used/contaminated medical supplies;
  • Coordinate pre-participation physical examinations, weight certifications, sickle cell testing and health care education including: concussion and drug testing education and other NCAA, conference and Lock Haven requirements;
  • Oversee insurance claims processes; submit necessary paperwork to the Athletic Department’s secondary insurance provider;
  • Annual review and revisions (by August 1st) of the Lock Haven standard operating procedure manual for athletic training services including but not limited to: The Lock Haven Emergency Action Plan and clinical protocols;
  • In coordination with the Director of Athletics, manage the athletic training supplies budget. Initiate all purchase orders for athletic training supplies, stock all items received, and maintain an accurate inventory;
  • Follow and maintain procedures for the general maintenance, calibration, and safety inspection of all athletic training facilities and equipment annually or as required. Submit work orders as needed;
  • Liaison between all athletic training personnel and the Director of Athletics and coaches;
  • Communicating (when ethically appropriate and permitted) to the head coaches regarding the status of the injury and/or illness on the student’s ability to safely train, compete or perform;
  • Providing timely communication with the Director of Athletics of any incidents with potential safety, personnel, programmatic, legal or public relations implications;
  • Ensure all athletic training personnel are NATA certified and are appropriately licensed in Pennsylvania and certified in CPR, AED, first aid, etc.;
  • Provide CPR, AED and First Aid training to coaches and document their annual certifications;
  • Supervise and educate the athletic training students who may be assigned a Lock Haven Athletic Department clinical rotation/field experience or work study students;
  • Work collaboratively with the faculty Athletic Training Program Director. Participating in shared governance of the Commonwealth faculty athletic department and attending the Lock Haven Athletic Department meetings;
  • Working non-traditional hours including weekends and evenings;
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics;
  • This position will require modest travel.

Fiscal Responsibility: Shared responsibility with budget management.

Supervisory Responsibility: Supervision and education of athletic training students who are assigned a Lock Haven Athletic Department clinical rotation/field experience or work study students.

  • Master’s Degree
  • NATA Certification
  • Pennsylvania licensure or eligibility
  • PR/CPR/ECC/AED certification
  • Experience as a certified athletic trainer
  • Knowledge of and experience with:
    • NCAA rules, drug testing, weight certification, nutritional counseling, PROmotion or other mental health screening apps, mental health awareness and screening, insurance claims and working with contact sports
  • Knowledge of and experience with NCAA rules
  • Compliant with NATA regulations.
  • High level of service and care to students, including but not limited to physician and specialist referrals
