Assistant Athletic Trainer, Faculty – 10 Months (2 Positions)

Job Description

The Assistant Athletic Trainer, as a non-instructional faculty member, will be a dedicated individual to be a part of a team who will provide strong leadership, and a high level of service and care to student-athletes and cheerleaders. Each faculty member must carry current certifications and understanding of NATA & NCAA guidelines concerning the health and welfare of student-athletes.

This is a 10-month tenure track position for Commonwealth University Lock Haven, a NCAA Division II institution with 21 sports programs (wrestling and field hockey at the NCAA Division I level). In addition to these NCAA sports programs, this position also supports cheerleading.

Essential Duties The Certified Athletic Trainer is responsible for:

  • Providing high quality health care athletic training services, which prioritizes the health, safety and well-being of the students associated with Lock Haven athletics;
  • Providing prevention, protection, assessment, rehabilitation and supervised care of injuries with appropriate guidance/direction to the student who participates in athletics and follow-up with team physicians;
  • Providing in-season, out-of-season, post-season practice coverage;
  • Providing in person athletic training coverage for all Lock Haven home competitions (in or out of the traditional season), post season championship competitions (home or away), home or away football and men and women wrestling contests/practices and ID Showcases/Clinics. Please note, when an athletic trainer is providing coverage for one of the above-mentioned scenarios the athletic trainer will not be allowed to provide coverage for other sports/activities;
  • Assisting with the organization, maintenance, supervision, and administration of the athletic training program including but not limited to,health care education, concussion education, drug testing, weight certification, staff development, budgeting and purchasing;
  • Ensuring the clinical practices, health care services and facilities meet or exceed all applicable laws, NCAA and conference requirements and Lock Haven policies and procedures including but not limited to concussion education and weight certification requirements;
  • Collecting, reviewing, maintaining confidentiality, securing and disposal of medical documentation/records for every student associated with Lock Haven Athletics including but not limited to: all required medical forms (HIPPA, sickle cell testing, etc.), insurance affidavits, physical clearances, medical hardships waivers, injury, treatment and mental health reports;
  • Reviewing and revising of standard operating procedure manual for athletic training services including but not limited to: The Lock Haven Emergency Action Plan and clinical protocols;
  • Distributing, collecting and reviewing PROmotion App or similar mental health screening app information and referring student athletes as appropriate;
  • Communicating (when ethically appropriate and permitted) to the head coaches regarding the status of the injury and/or illness on the student’s ability to safely train, compete or perform;
  • Providing timely communication with the Head Athletic Trainer and Director of Athletics of any incidents with potential health and safety, personnel, programmatic, legal or public relations implications;
  • Organizing and inventorying of athletic training supplies as well as ensuring safe disposal of used supplies;
  • Following and maintaining procedures for general maintenance, calibration and safety inspections of all training rooms, facilities, and equipment;
  • Supervising and educating the athletic training students who may be assigned a Lock Haven Athletic Department clinical rotation/field experience or work study students;
  • Participating in shared governance of the Commonwealth faculty athletic department and attending the Lock Haven Athletic Department meetings;
  • Working non-traditional hours including weekends and evenings;
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
  • This position will require modest travel.

Specific Duties

Fiscal Responsibility: Shared responsibility with budget management. Supervisory Responsibility: Supervision and education of athletic training students who are assigned a Lock Haven Athletic Department clinical rotation/field experience or work study students.

Recommendation for hiring is needed from a majority of the regular, full-time department faculty.   Prior to a final offer of employment, the selected candidate will be required to submit to a background check including, but not limited to, employment verification, educational and other credential verification, Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance and criminal background.   Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree
  • NATA Certification
  • Pennsylvania licensure or eligibility
  • PR/CPR/ECC/AED certification required
  • Experience as a certified athletic trainer required
  • Knowledge of and experience with:
    • NCAA rules, drug testing, weight certification, nutritional counseling, PROmotion or other mental health screening apps, mental health awareness and screening, insurance claims and working with contact sports.
  • Knowledge of and experience with NCAA rules
  • Compliant with NATA regulations
  • High level of service and care to students, including but not limited to physician and specialist referrals
