Job Description

The University of Hawai`i at Manoa (UH Manoa) seeks nominations and/or applications for its next Director of Athletics. The Director of Athletics leads Hawai`i’s only NCAA Division I women’s and men’s athletics program and the only major athletics program within 2500 miles. The Director of Athletics reports to the University of Hawai`i President, and is responsible for leadership and management of the program’s $40-$45 million a year operating budget supporting 21 major sports, over 450 student-athletes, approximately 125 full-time coaches and staff, and over 250 student assistants and volunteers.

The Director of Athletics guides the athletics program in a manner commensurate with the vision, mission and values of the University. Responsibilities include strategy, planning, policy and implementation; strengthening and promoting the University’s athletics program while solidifying its success and recognition; managing public relations, media, marketing and fundraising initiatives; ensuring the fiscal soundness of the program through revenue generation and cost control; making challenging and high-profile personnel decisions; and providing an environment in which the physical, mental, social and academic well-being of all student-athletes is a priority for coaches, staff and the entire department.

The Director of Athletics must model integrity at the highest level; promote gender equity, inclusion and diversity as they encourage and support a multicultural environment grounded in Hawai`i, and carefully manage budget challenges by generating new revenues and containing costs. They must build and maintain effective and productive relationships with other academic institutions, athletic conferences, national intercollegiate athletics organizations, and the diverse athletic stakeholders within Hawai‘i and beyond. UH Manoa is one of the premier research institutions of higher learning internationally, and one of the nation’s few land-, sea-, space- and sun-grant institutions. It is the flagship campus of the UH System and enrolls approximately 19,000 students. UH Manoa plays a vital role in education, research, outreach, and service including serving its Hawaiian, Asian, and Pacific communities. Many of the University’s fields of study relate directly to the distinctive geographical and cultural setting of Hawai‘i, an island community with diverse ecosystems and exceptional cultural diversity.
