Job Description
The San Francisco 49ers offer full-time internships to individuals wishing to gain professional sports experience and make meaningful connections in the National Football League. Our internship program is built to develop future leadership talent that reflects our diverse community. The internship program is a paid opportunity that allows participants to contribute to the organization’s success while practicing the knowledge and theories learned in the classroom.
While each intern will be working with a specific department, they will be given the opportunity to explore different areas within the organization through group networking events, training, and 1:1 meetings. Our interns also have a committed mentor, a supportive team, and a real-world project to advance their skills and expand their understanding of a career in sports. Our goal is to create “fans for life” at the end of every internship.
General Internship details and expectations:
- Our interns are paid $18.00 an hour and are expected to work 30 – 40 or more hours per week during the internship period.
- Interns are expected to commit to the full term of the internship and be mostly onsite (no remote internships are available) which typically runs from May to May.
- Interns are expected to work flexible hours that include nights, holidays, and weekends.
- Internships are available in Communications, Community Impact, Revenue, Marketing & Business, Strategy & Analytics, Sports Medicine.
Position Summary:
The Athletic Trainer Intern will be part of an integrated Performance Team, consisting of medical, strength and conditioning, sport science, rehabilitation, performance therapy, and nutrition practitioners. The Athletic Training Intern will assist in providing injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation to players during the season, as well as the off-season.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Works directly with athletes on injury recovery and prevention.
- Assists the Performance Team on general health and fitness development and maintenance.
- Assists in emergency as member of emergency action plan.
- Assists Head Athletic Trainer in daily tasks including calendar, broad projects, coordinating with Team Physicians, and medical personnel.
- Helps set up and break down of daily activities.
- Updates required inventory reports for the NFL league office.
- Coordinates transportation to medical appointments as directed.
- Assists with maintaining medication records.
- Helps maintain all workers compensation injuries.
- Helps maintain all permanent medical records of all players.
- Travels with athletic teams to sporting events to be available as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Abilities and Skills:
- Ability to work a non-standard workweek, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to work 40-hour workweek during offseason and 40+ hour workweek in season and Training Camp.
- Communicates orally and in writing in a clear, concise, and impartial manner.
- Organizational skills with the ability to manage time effectively, while balancing and prioritizing multiple or competing tasks.
- Professionalism in all interactions with fans, partners, 49ers staff members and 49ers players, alumni, executives, coaches, and their families.
- Punctuality and accountability are essential for all aspects of an intern’s role.
- Detail-oriented self-starter with proven ability to learn new skills.
- BOC eligible or certification required.
- Thorough understanding of injury treatment and prevention.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent degree required.
- Masters or Doctorate degree preferred.

The employee will be in an indoor/outdoor facility most of the time and may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions.

The position requires the employee to be local. The employee must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
